Identity is the way we perceive ourselves. Factors such as ethnic backgrounds, sex, and one’s body play a major role in defining one’s identity. Although they may play a major role, our identity can change throughout our life. Experiences people go through can alter how they perceive themselves and how others may perceive them as well. While growing up my ideas of identity were influenced by race and beauty through photos in fashion magazines and television. As I became older I questioned my own identity based off societies perspective of how I am supposed to look. During this time of questioning I began to create paintings and prints of black women that depict my perception of identity.
